West Indies achieved a significant triumph over Afghanistan, defeating them by a margin of 104 runs in the final group stage match of the T20 World Cup 2024. The match took place on Tuesday at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia. Afghanistan were set a formidable goal of 219 runs, but they were dismissed for a mere 114 in just 16.2 overs.

Obed McCoy stood up as the most successful bowler, achieving impressive numbers of 3-14, as the West Indies team maintained control of the game. Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein secured two wickets apiece.
Ibrahim Zadran emerged as the highest run-scorer for Afghanistan, accumulating 38 runs off 28 deliveries while batting at the opening position. Nevertheless, the Rashid Khan-led team’s batting performance was underwhelming, resulting in a significant loss.
Prior to the match, Afghanistan won the coin toss and opted to field first against the West Indies.
Nicholas Pooran delivered an exceptional performance, scoring 98 runs off 53 balls, enabling the Windies to achieve a formidable total of 218-5 in just 20 overs.
Pooran was unfortunate to be denied a well-deserved century when he was dismissed due to a run-out while attempting the second run in the last over. He hit six boundaries and eight sixes.
Johnson Charles scored 43 runs in 27 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries.
Gulbadin Naib took 2 wickets for 14 runs, while Azmatullah Omarzai and Naveen-ul-Haq each took one wicket.
Both teams had already secured a place in the Super 8 stage after emerging victorious in their initial three matches in Group C.
Pacer Romario Shepherd has departed from the West Indies training camp in order to attend the birth of his second kid prior to today’s match. He is scheduled to rejoin the squad tomorrow. Obed McCoy took his place. Meanwhile, Afghanistan remained unchanged.
